We've all heard the adage "the most sustainable garment is the one already in your wardrobe" and yes it's true, buying less is with out doubt the single biggest change we can all make (as consumers). But it's unrealistic to think we're all going to stop shopping altogether, so before looking for something new, vintage is for sure the best choice. Not only are you eliminating any impact of making new clothing completely - like air, land and water pollution - but you're also reducing the amount of post-consumer fashion waste, an enormous problem, that we've written about before.

There is more to vintage shopping than meets the eye; whether you are looking for a peer to peer resale platform, an online vintage boutique, a curated vintage shop or a kilo store, there is something for everyone. Take a (very) short ferry ride from Centraal Station to visit this off the beaten track haven for premium vintage apparel from Alius Amsterdam, and rare and hard to find vintage sneaker from Vilis Vintage. Expect brands like Nike, New Balance, Reebok, Adidas, Asics and Salomon.

LUCILLE is a shop for all people, carrying an array of vintage and thoughtfully made clothing, homewares, beauty products, incense, other things that smell wonderful, vintage furniture and stereo components. Everything they carry shares the common qualities - well made and not mass produced. Curated by Hannah and Nico - a couple from Los Angeles - a wardrobe stylist and a musician by trade, who opened LUCILLE in August of 2020 with an aim to curate community and comradery.

The Collection One is an Amsterdam vintage store founded by Lisa Schotman. Lisa has created a beautifully curated space offering item that you can enjoy for a long time; carefully selected vintage pieces as well as items from brands that are honest about their production and use high-quality materials. Lisa selects brands by instinct, always keeping three things in mind: who made it, where it was made, and what kind of fabrics were used; offering as much transparency to you as possible.

ENSŌ VINTAGE

In 2019 Andrea & Liseth started Ensō from a desire to wear modern clothing without harming people or the planet. At Ensō you can find high quality curated modern vintage. Ensō handpick every single item with a lot of passion - they see thousands to find “the one”. For Ensō there is no such thing as waste - next to curated vintage items, they also up-cycle vintage in their atelier in Amsterdam.

The New Studio is a Rotterdam based brand selling curated items. Founded by Eva and Silvia, who both grew up in artistic and creative environments, taking inspiration from the city of Rotterdam with raw, hardworking energy. They see the world in a special way and strive to share this feeling with the people they meet. The New Studio brings you a beautiful collection for the modern city (wo)man.

VEIST STORE

NEUKÖLLN, BERLIN

Veist is a designer second hand and vintage consignment shop in Berlin. Veist take selected items of clothing on commission and continue to tell the story of a loved item of clothing to future owners through the “Kleidergeschichten” (dress stories) you find on each piece. Read the stories and you might discover a silk blouse was previously owned by an ambassador's wife or a patterned cardigan of a fashion-loving New Yorker.

With a focus on 1980s and 1990s, and unisex pieces, Veist stock well known designers alongside lesser known brands; the two shop owners, Sandra Troegl and Anna Veit, share the belief that it's not a designer name that is important but that the clothes are well-manufactured with a good longevity.

LOPPIS VINTAGE STORE

NEUKÖLLN, BERLIN

Loppis Vintage is a handpicked second hand & vintage boutique in Neukölln that opened in 2019. They focus on quality materials, basics and everyday favourite pieces, with a strong curation that includes luxury brands like Prada an YSL alongside younger brands like Nanushka and Vegabond. They don't have a website, so you'll have to pay them a visit!

We asked Eliza Camila Edwards, journalist and founder of the Slow Exposure - a platform promoting conscious consumption - to tell us where she goes when she's vintage shopping in Berlin:

Not Too Sweet is a BIPOC, female owned sustainable fashion brand built on being ethical and cruelty-free. Since 2013, they've been selling vintage clothing, ethical jewelry and reworked vintage from local Berlin fashion designers, with the goal of to embracing diversity and promoting sustainable fashion for all genders and place emphasis on comfort and durability.

Since 1986, Cenci has sold to celebrities, stylists, collectors, theatre companies and fashion houses in London. Cenci is the place to go for authentic vintage clothing made beautifully in exquisite fabrics. With originals of every shape and form from all periods from the Thirties to the Nineties and hundreds of thousands of pieces available in the stockroom or on the shop floor. You won't find Cenci in central London, but tucked away in West Norward, with nothing marking their door but a small green label that lets you know you've found the right place!

Nordic Poetry was founded by Swedish born Ameli Lindgren who had a vision to elevate the perception of vintage with a brand purpose. Starting life at Boxpark Shoreditch, in 2017 they set-up shop at 141 Bethnal Green Road. All the time Lindgren’s reputation for deciphering and curating the best garments was steadily growing, drawing recommendations as London’s best vintage designer store from likes of Vogue and Highsnobiety.

East Londoners, Louisa and Onur founded Go East Vintage Flea Market in 2021 to bring sustainable shopping, music, eating and drinking under one roof, with a fun, festival atmosphere. They have hand-picked some of the best traders to represent Go East Vintage, and with help from local singers and Leyton warehouse venue Patchworks, they've been hosting monthly events where you can find an array of vintage treasures.
